The University Grants Commission recently issued a sizable payment to Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), the university, according to JMI, which on Saturday disputed claims that the institution was in “financial constraint.” After Jamia Teachers Association President Majid Jamil warned the media that the institution was in financial trouble, the university released a statement.
The institution disclaims any liability for Jamil’s private remarks, according to a statement from Jamia’s Public Relations Office, which also claims that the information is factually false. The vice chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia, Najma Akhtar, is also mentioned in the paper, indicating the difficulty the university is experiencing. The institution has made it clear that the Vice-Chancellor hasn’t recently made any comments of this nature.
According to the UGC letters dated September 1, 2022, “the Vice-Chancellor herself has announced publicly at the Teachers Day function on September 5, 2022, that the UGC has released a substantial grant for the university to meet all the funds required for outstanding medical bills, tuition reimbursement, post-retirement benefits, etc. and will very soon release more grants to meet other requirements of the university.”
Accordingly, the statement said that the Ministry of Education/UGC letters dated September 22, 2022, have approved the increased grant and salary award. According to the university, Professor Majid Jamil talked to the media without first seeking confirmation from the institution’s leadership.
