The Russian Finance Minister voiced his support for India joining the Security Council as a permanent member during the 77th session of the UN General Assembly.
Sergey Lavrov, the foreign minister of Russia, spoke out in favour of India becoming a permanent member of the Security Council during the 77th session of the UN General Assembly on Saturday.
Just an hour before External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s speech, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated the UN and Security Council needed to be in line with modern realities in his address to the General Assembly.
According to him, Moscow believes that adding more nations from Latin America, Asia, and Africa will only increase the Security Council’s democratic potential.
The signatories of the Joint Statement agreed that multilateralism needs to be improved and successful if a resilient world is to find answers to problems like poverty, terrorism, pandemics, climate change, and global food security.
The signatories are Papua New Guinea, Brazil, Dominica, Grenada, Haiti, India, Jamaica, Mongolia, Nigeria, South Africa, and Vanuatu.
India’s Minister of External Affairs, S. Jaishankar, convened a G4 meeting on Thursday and later tweeted, “Reiterated our joint commitment to work towards text-based negotiations that lead to reformed multilateralism. Will continue our cooperation towards the goal”.
As an elected non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, India is now halfway through its two-year term.
In December, when India also serves as the month’s President of the influential UN body, the Council’s term will come to a close. In a covert attack on China, EAM Jaishankar also said that India is ready to assume more responsibility, that negotiations for the urgently needed UN Security Council reforms shouldn’t be stymied by procedural barriers, and that opponents of the process couldn’t hold it “hostage in perpetuity.”
