Goa's government will train math teachers in response to concerns raised by the NAS report

Panaji, Goa Chief Minister Sawant has stated that math instructors will receive specialised training to help them advance their careers as a result of the National Achievement Survey (NAS) survey, which revealed that Goa pupils performed poorly in math and science.

On Saturday during the “Shiksha Pe Charcha” programme, the Chief Minister virtually engaged with educators, students, and parents.

Sawant referred to the NAS report, which revealed that Goan pupils had performed poorly in math, languages, social sciences, and sciences when compared to the national average. Sawant noted that every attempt is being made to provide instructors with training.

“First five years, from age 3 to 8 years are very important for students, hence along with teachers, parents also should work towards the progress of students,” the Chief Minister said.

“We are less than the national average in mathematics and science. When this news got published, to whom people criticised? Blame is on the government and on me as Education Minister. Do I go to teach students? Do I go to school (to teach)? Do I take their studies? Who teaches them? You compare our state to others. Is there any dearth (in facilities)? Infrastructure is lacking? Salary is less? Have we hesitated giving you (whatever demanded)? Everything we have given. Then why less average? I have concern for our students,” Sawant had said addressing the Goa Headmasters Association programme.

“We have given priority to language and mathematics. If it is taught systematically to students at a young age then it will help them in future too,” Sawant added. Several months prior, the Chief Minister had questioned the teaching community regarding why Goa’s education standards were ranked below the national average in a number of subjects, including mathematics and science, despite the fact that they were well-paid and supported by all necessary infrastructure.
