International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty’s overarching theme for 2022–2023 is Dignity for All in Practice.

Every year on October 17, the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, also known as World Poverty Day, is observed. It is a day set aside internationally to increase awareness of the need to eradicate poverty worldwide in all of its manifestations. The 2022 Theme is Dignity For All in Practice

The first World Day for Overcoming Extreme Poverty was celebrated on October 17, 1987. The UN General Assembly emphasised the need to consciously work toward respecting the rights of the poor and lowering poverty rates around the world five years after the UN General Assembly had deemed poverty to be a violation of human rights.

In addition to being a fundamental right in and of itself, the dignity of the human being serves as the cornerstone for all other fundamental rights. As a result, “Dignity” is a personal value that each and every person has. Many persons in persistent poverty today encounter disdain and denial of their dignity.

The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty and the World Day to Overcome Extreme Poverty each celebrate their 35th and 30th anniversaries this year. This Day celebrates the crucial global unity and shared responsibility we bear to end poverty and resist all forms of prejudice while also honouring the millions of individuals living in poverty and their everyday bravery.
