Action taken against 3 police officers in the Lucknow gangrape case after identification of the accused

Following a case involving the gangrape of a tutor in Lucknow, the Uttar Pradesh Police initiated action against several of its officers on Monday. A police station in charge has reportedly been suspended, and three SHOs have been given show-cause warnings for their careless handling of the case.

The aforementioned police officers have all been charged with negligence and with keeping the incident a secret from higher-ups. The development follows the alleged gangrap of an 18-year-old tutor in Lucknow as she drove an auto rickshaw home after teaching near the fire station at Kathauta Crossing.

“On October 16, a complaint was received at PS Vibhuti Khand about a woman raped by two men in an autorickshaw. A case has been registered and even the accused have been identified. We have constituted teams to nab the culprits. The in-charge of Husariya police outpost has been suspended for not taking immediate action,” she added.

“The auto stopped near the fire station and I asked if he would go to Charbagh. There was a youth sitting in the auto beside the auto driver. After travelling for some kilometres, the auto driver drove the vehicle on the wrong route to a dark stretch of the road,” the victim said.

“I sensed something wrong and raised an alarm. But the auto driver took me to the dark stretch and they both took turns raping me for three hours. They took away my phone and hit a hard object on my head before dumping me. The auto driver threatened to kill me if I reported the matter to the police,” she alleged.

The victim claims that there was a second passenger in the car in addition to the driver, and they raped her. The victim was transported for a medical examination not long after arriving at the police station, where a case was promptly opened. A case has been filed for wrongful detention, gang rape, looting, and assault on the survivor, according to Deputy Commissioner of Police for the East Zone, Prachi Singh.
