The court case against former Manchester United left-back Evra for allegedly uttering homophobic remarks was postponed until December 15.
Evra, 41, who also won 81 caps for France before retiring from the game three years ago, was accused by two organizations of making “public insults toward a group of persons based on their sexual orientation.”
Jerome Boursican, Evra’s attorney, stated he had just recently been hired and had only learned of the case’s aspects a few days before the hearing; thus, the court should be granted his request for an adjournment on Monday.
After the hearing, Julien Pontes, a representative for the anti-homophobia organization Rouge Direct, remarked, “It’s terrible.”
He said that “we were waiting for a judicial message” before the World Cup in Qatar.
He said that “a few weeks before the World Cup in Qatar, we were anticipating a judicial message” and that “a big signal” would be the conviction of a former France captain.
Evra, who was not present in court on Monday, is being assessed for remarks he made on social media following United’s victory against Paris Saint-Germain in the 2019 Champions League.
“You gays in Paris… Men speak in this place, “said Evra.
Evra had talked in a “private sphere for the making of a film which was afterward released on Snapchat,” an investigating judge claimed in May.
Evra might be subject to a 1,500 euro punishment (1,450 dollars).
