Guru Tegh Bahadur Death Anniversary Special: 24 November

Every year on 24 November, the death anniversary of the ninth Guru of the Sikhs, Guru Tegh Bahadur, is celebrated as Martyrdom Day. Guru Tegh Bahadur was the ninth of the ten Sikh Gurus. In world history, Guru Teg Bahadur Saheb’s place is unique among those who sacrificed their lives to protect religion and human values, ideals and principles. Today is his death anniversary, Martyrdom Day, but let us know some things about him.

Guru Tegh Bahadur Singh was born in the year 1621 on Vaisakh Krishna Panchami in Amritsar, Punjab. Tegh Bahadur was called Tyag Mal because of his ascetic nature. He was the youngest son of the sixth Sikh Guru, Guru Hargobind and Mata Nanaki. Since childhood, Guru Teg Bahadur Ji received education in religious scriptures as well as weapons and horse riding etc.

Due to the untimely death of Harikrishna Rai Ji (8th Guru of the Sikhs), Guru Teg Bahadur Ji was made the Guru. Guru Hargobind Ji named Tyag Mal as Tegh Bahadur (Brave Sword) after showing extraordinary bravery in the battle (Battle of Kartarpur) against the Mughal attack with his father at the age of just 14 years.

The Deputy Prime Minister of India is a senior member of the Union Council of Ministers…
Guru Tegh Bahadur is virtually revered for his piety, wisdom and selfless sacrifice. 116 Shabads in 15 Ragas of Bani composed by Guru Tegh Bahadur Singh Ji are compiled in Shri Guru Granth Sahib.

He stood up against religious persecution and fought for freedom of belief and expression. When Kashmiri Pandits sought his help to protect their right to practice their faith without any coercion, Guru Tegh Bahadur fearlessly faced Aurangzeb. He was arrested in Delhi along with his companions and given the choice of converting to Islam or facing death. Refusing to renounce his faith and principles, he chose martyrdom and was hanged in Delhi on November 24, 1675.
