Chaudhary Charan Singh was born on December 23, 1902 in Noorpur city of Bijnor district of United Province (today’s Uttar Pradesh). In the year 1925 he obtained M.A. and in the year 1926 he obtained the degree of Law. 1928 He started practicing law in Ghaziabad. In February 1937, at the age of 34, he was elected MLA from Chhaprauli (Baghpat).

Influenced by Gandhiji, he jumped into the national freedom movement. He also went to jail in 1930 and 1942. After independence, he became a cabinet minister in the Govind Vallabh Pant government of Uttar Pradesh in 1951. He was critical of Nehru’s cooperative policy. He believed that the ownership rights of the farmer’s land should remain with the farmer only.
In 1967, after leaving the Congress, he founded the Bharatiya Kranti Dal (BLD). He was also the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh twice. When the Janata Party government was formed in 1977, he was the Home Minister and later the Finance Minister in the Morarji government.
Charan Singh was also the “Deputy Prime Minister” during the tenure of Morarji Desai. But, due to increasing differences with Morarji Desai, Charan Singh left the Janata Dal party, due to which Morarji Desai’s government fell.
Prime Minister who never faced Parliament
Became the 5th Prime Minister of the country on July 28, 1979 with the support of Congress (I). Chaudhary Charan Singh resigned from the post of Prime Minister on August 20, 1979 due to withdrawal of support from Indira Gandhi. Thus, he became the Prime Minister who never faced the Parliament while being the Prime Minister.
He died on May 29, 1987. Charan Singh became famous as a farmer leader. His mausoleum situated in New Delhi has been named Kisan Ghat. His birthday (23 December) is celebrated as Farmer’s Day. He also wrote books on agrarian reform, zamindari, economy, land reform.
