Today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new campus of Nalanda University near the ancient site of Rajgir, marking a significant milestone in the revival of one of the world’s most historic centers of learning. This modern institution draws inspiration from the ancient Nalanda University, which was a celebrated hub of education over 1,600 years ago in the ancient kingdom of Magadha, present-day Bihar.
The original Nalanda University was established in the 5th century CE and was renowned as the world’s first residential university. It attracted scholars from across Asia and beyond, offering a wide range of subjects from mathematics and astronomy to philosophy and Buddhism. Under the patronage of the Pala dynasty, the university flourished, boasting eminent scholars such as Aryabhata among its faculty. The institution was also famous for its rigorous admission processes and its vast library, ‘Dharma Gunj,’ which was reputed to contain countless manuscripts and texts.
However, the glorious legacy of Nalanda was abruptly halted in the 1190s when Bakhtiyar Khilji’s army destroyed the university. The ruins of Nalanda were rediscovered in 1812, sparking interest in its historical significance and the potential for its revival.
The idea to restore Nalanda as an international center for learning was championed by Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam in 2006. The new Nalanda University began operations in 2014, aiming to revive the spirit of its ancient predecessor while incorporating modern educational standards and practices.
The newly inaugurated campus by PM Modi spans 455 acres and is an architectural marvel that blends contemporary design with traditional elements. It features environmentally sustainable components, including a Net Zero zone, which ensures that the campus operates with a minimal environmental footprint.
“Nalanda University is not just an institution, but a symbol of India’s heritage of knowledge and wisdom. Its revival is a testament to our commitment to education and cultural exchange,” stated Prime Minister Modi during the inauguration ceremony.
The revitalized Nalanda University offers a variety of postgraduate and doctoral research programs. It is designed to attract scholars from around the globe, much like its ancient predecessor. The university provides scholarships for international students, aiming to foster a diverse academic community and promote cultural exchange.
Vice-Chancellor Sunaina Singh expressed her vision for the institution, saying, “Nalanda University aims to create a vibrant intellectual environment that not only preserves the ancient traditions of learning but also advances cutting-edge research and innovation.”
The inauguration of the new campus is a momentous occasion that reflects India’s dedication to restoring its ancient heritage while advancing modern education. By providing a platform for scholarly pursuits and cultural interactions, Nalanda University aspires to reclaim its status as a global hub of learning.
The new campus stands as a symbol of resilience and renewal, embodying the timeless pursuit of knowledge and wisdom.
