A terrible landslide after heavy rains in Kerala’s Wayanad district has caused devastation. Landslides occurred in different hilly areas near Meppadi early Tuesday. Hundreds of houses, vehicles and shops were submerged in water in Mundkai and Churalmala towns. 36 people died in this accident, while hundreds are stranded. Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) said that several teams have been sent to the affected areas for rescue operations. However, heavy rains are causing a lot of problems in relief and rescue operations.
Announcement of giving two lakh rupees from National Relief Fund: PM Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and many others have expressed grief over this entire accident. Even PM Modi has announced an ex-gratia amount of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund to the families of each person killed in the landslide. Also, Rs 50,000 will be given to the injured. PM Modi spoke to Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan and assured all possible help from the Centre.
Kerala Health Minister Veena George said that the death toll has increased. Meanwhile, PM Narendra Modi said on social media platform X, ‘I am distressed by the landslides in some parts of Wayanad. My thoughts are with all those who have lost loved ones and prayers for those injured. Rescue operations are currently underway to help all affected people. Spoke to Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan and assured all possible help from the Center in view of the current situation there.
About 225 army personnel deployed
Indian Army said that a landslide has occurred in Meppadi in Wayanad, Kerala. Hundreds of people are feared trapped. The Army was requested this morning to assist the civil administration. In response, the Army has mobilized four columns, including two columns of X 122 Infantry Battalion (Territorial Army) and two from the former DSC Centre, Kannur. The total number of troops deployed so far for the rescue operation is around 225, including medical personnel. Difficult challenges are being faced due to rain.
