The evening of 26 September marked another significant milestone in the history of Indian technology. 3 PARAM Supercomputers have been launched in three major cities Pune, Noida, and Delhi specialize in weather and climate research. These supercomputers, developed by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) under the National Supercomputing Mission, are set to revolutionize research and development across various scientific and engineering domains. PM Narendra Modi reiterated the attention to the day because of which we can achieve this day, he said:“We started the national supercomputing mission in 2015 and now quantum computing technology has taken a lead which will help improve IT, manufacturing, MSMEs, and startups.”

What is the National Supercomputing Mission?

The National Supercomputing Mission, launched in 2015, aims to create a network of 10 high-performance computing systems nationwide. The Param Rudra supercomputers are part of this ambitious initiative. They are expected to be pivotal in addressing complex computational challenges in climate modeling, drug discovery, materials science, and artificial intelligence. With its remarkable achievement, it has now set a foot forward. PM Narendra Modi mentioned that a country can only aim for higher achievement if it has a vision appropriately supported by technological upgrades that should empower the poor.

These new supercomputers have been named Arunika and Arka resembling the sun and are expected to enhance the accuracy and lead time of predictions related to tropical cyclones, heavy rains, heat waves, thunderstorms, and other critical weather phenomena. weather and astronomical forecast.

With this India has launched Mission Gaganyan which aims at creating India’s own Space Station. With the launch of these supercomputers, India has officially completed the first phase of this mission.

One of these supercomputers is based in Pune. This Giant Metre Radio Telescope (GMRT) in Pune will utilize the supercomputer to investigate Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) and other astronomical phenomena. The various cosmic events emit intense bursts of radio waves lasting only a few milliseconds. By analyzing the data collected by the GMRT, scientists can gain valuable insights into the nature and origins of FRBs, which could help us understand the structure and evolution of the universe.

The Inter University Accelerator Centre (IUAC) in Delhi will employ this supercomputer’s capabilities in advanced research fields of atomic and material sciences. This will contribute to advancements in various industries, including energy, electronics, and healthcare. While the S.N. Bose Centre in Kolkata will leverage the supercomputer to conduct cutting-edge research in areas such as physics, cosmology, and earth sciences. This will help scientists address fundamental questions about the universe and its evolution, as well as understand the Earth’s climate and natural processes.

These High-Performance Computing (HPC) system is specifically designed for weather and climate research. It will enable scientists to develop more accurate and sophisticated weather models, predict extreme weather events, and study the long-term impacts of climate change. This will have significant implications for disaster management, agriculture, and public health.

The project represents an investment of ₹850 crore, marking a significant leap in India’s computational capabilities for meteorological applications. The supercomputer will provide a powerful tool for Indian scientists to conduct world-class research and contribute to global scientific advancements.

In addition, the enhanced computational capabilities provided by these systems will not only accelerate scientific breakthroughs but also have far-reaching implications for various sectors, including agriculture, disaster management, and public safety, making this a pivotal moment in India’s technological progress.
