While the world is still not over the Omicron variant of the coronavirus, there is a new variant that is taking over the west which has been named ‘Delmicron’ . It is a combination of the Delta and the Omicron variant. The number of cases of Delmicron in the United States and Europe has surged rapidly in the past couple of weeks.
Very little is known about the variants so far but the Delmicron is spreading much faster than the Omicron and The Delta variant of the Coronavirus. Omicron is a highly mutated B.1.1.529 form of SARS CoV-2 and was first discovered in South Africa. Omicron has so far shown milder symptoms than the delta variant which shook the world to its core during the second wave of the pandemic earlier this year. The mortality rate of Omicron is also much lower than the delta variant.
Delmicron basically means the twin spiking of the two variants at the same time. This phenomenon is currently being seen in the European countries and the United States where the situation seems to be out of control and expected to get worse in the upcoming days.
People were hoping to get a pandemic-free 2022 which doesn’t seem likely if the cases do not go down. Although a number of vaccines were invented, they have not been administered to everyone. WHO has insisted that instead of rolling out additional doses to the already vaccinated people, the governments should focus more on vaccinating the most vulnerable of groups. The new variant has taken over the world and continues to spread in more than 106 countries so far.
236 cases across 16 states and UTs have been recorded in India as of now. But the good news is that 104 of them have also recovered or migrated, according to the Union Health Ministry. Maharashtra is in the lead with 65 cases and the national capital has 64 cases. Other states such as Telangana 24, Karnataka 19, Rajasthan 21, and Kerala 15 also have some cases.
While the ‘highly mutated’ Omicron has been spreading at an unprecedented rate, the threats of Delta variant are also looming over the world. The spread of both of them has led to a flood of cases in the west and India could be engulfed too. There are various measures being taken by the union government to halt the spread of the ‘Delmicron’ wave. Before a new variant is born, the world better starts taking it seriously, or else we might have another year of a pandemic on our hands.
