The National Capital of India is leading in the race for the highest number of patients infected with the latest variant of the Coronavirus. Delhi has recorded 238 cases so far while Maharashtra has recorded 167 cases of the virus. The country has seen a 44 percent rise in the Omicron cases overall which is not at all a good sign.
The total tally of cases of the highly transmissible Omicron has gone up to 781 in the country. This variant was first found in South Africa and has now engulfed 21 states and union territories of the country.
India has reported over 9000 fresh cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours which is 44 percent more than the previous day. In the wake of this rapid surge of cases all over the country, the government has sped up the vaccination drive throughout the nation. Over 140 crore vaccines have been given so far which will hopefully boost the nation in its fight against the Coronavirus. While the number of active cases is increasing at a very fast pace, the recovery rate has also shot up to 98.40 percent. This is also the highest recovery rate recorded since March 2020.
Around 7347 patients suffering from Covid have also recovered in the past 24 hours which makes the number of total recovered patients to 3,42,51,292.
The WHO ( World Health Organisation ) has said that the threats posed by this variant of Corona are still “very high”. This statement came in after the number of patients globally increased by 11 percent. It is also reported that Omicron has less rate of hospitalization than the Delta Variant but there is not much information available to the scientific community to reach other conclusions. The severity of the virus is yet to be determined.
With Delhi reporting the most number of cases so far, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has taken stringent measures to contain the virus as fast as possible. The Delhi government has imposed the “level-1” alert under the GRAP ( Graded Response Action Plan ) including the new restrictions put keeping in mind the festival season. Kejriwal reported that the new curbs have been imposed as the positivity rate of the Coronavirus had crossed 0.5 in the past two days.
The Union Health Ministry had also issued an advisory earlier this week to all States and Union Territories and had urged them to speed up the vaccination drive at the local level. It also recommended them to impose rules and regulations keeping in mind their own area. The Union government has also approved two more vaccines and an anti-viral pill yesterday to strengthen the nation’s fight against the virus. Hopefully, all these steps taken will provide much-needed relief from the deadly COVID-19.
