Hijab Controversy in Karnataka leads to shutting down of education institutes across the state

The High Court of Karnataka has appealed to all the students to maintain peace and tranquillity in the state. On Wednesday, the Karnataka High court referred to the petitions of the people challenging the hijab ban in some of the colleges in the state to a larger bench. 

The police in the state of Karnataka has banned protests, demonstrations, and agitations within a 200-meter radius from all the educational institutes in the city of Bengaluru for the coming two weeks. The High Court had heard petitions on Tuesday and had appealed to all the students to maintain peace in the state in the meantime. The state government of Karnataka has also announced the closing down of high schools and colleges for the coming three days after the tensions over the Hijab Row took over several parts of the state.

Congress leader also stated in the favour of women, saying that it is a woman’s right to wear whatever she wants to wear, be it a veil or a hijab. The single bench hearing of the case challenging the ban on wearing hijab ended after it was being referred to the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court. Justice Krishna Dixit has said that these matters have given rise to a few constitutional questions of seminal importance considering there are certain aspects of personal law involved.

The Single bench hearing that consisted of Justice Krishna Dixit after hearing the matter has referred the case to a larger bench of the High Court of Karnataka. The Justice has also observed that the referred bench will be considering the question of interim relief. 

Meanwhile gatherings, demonstrations, agitations, and protests of any time within a radius of 200-meter radius from the schools, PU Colleges, Degree Colleges, or any other similar institutes of education in the capital city, Bengaluru for the next two weeks with an immediate effect, as per the Police Department of Karnataka. 

Aaditya Thackeray, Maharashtra Minister has weighed in on the situation stating that if there is a prescribed uniform in colleges or schools, it should be followed. He further added that Education should be the only focus of the centres of educational institutions and that religious or political issues should not enter the educational premises. Although the matter has now been referred to a larger bench, similar hijab-related issues in Kerala and Madras were decided earlier by single judge benches. 

The protests took off in the state in Government Girls PU College located in Udupi when the students were allegedly barred from classes for insisting on wearing Hijabs.
