Jawaharlal Nehru (1889-1964) started his career as a lawyer and member of the Indian congress under British rule. He was influenced by the teachings of Mohandas K. (Mahatma) Gandhi and imprisoned several times by the British. When India gained home rule in 1947, he became its first prime minister (1947-1964). Jawaharlal Nehru, the first prime minister of India, held office between August 1947 and May 1964. He passed away on May 27, 1964.

Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru has played a major role in making India a sovereign, socialist, secular, and democratic republic. He was also a prolific writer and has authored several books including ‘The Discovery of India’, ‘Glimpses of World History, and his autobiography ‘Toward Freedom’.

“Tributes to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Ji on his death anniversary,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted.

On Friday Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and other party leaders paid floral tributes to India’s first prime minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on his 58th death anniversary at his Shanti Van memorial in New Delhi.
