Assam floods: The situation worsens as 11 people have died in the last 24 hours, bringing the total death toll to 81.

Officials reported the flood situation in Assam worsened on Monday, with 11 more people killed, bringing the total death toll to 81. Around 48 lakh people have been affected in 32 of the state’s 34 districts.According to officials, 64 people have perished as a result of pre-monsoon and monsoon rains since April this year, including children and women, and 17 people have died as a result of landslides.

The floods have affected 47,72,140 individuals, including 10,43,382 children, according to an ASDMA bulletin issued Monday night.

The Assam government has instructed the Army to be on stand-by mode to reach out to the afflicted people while national and state agencies, including the National Disaster Response Force, are working round-the-clock in relief and rescue operations.

“Hon HM Shri @AmitShah ji called twice since morning to enquire about the flood situation in Assam. He informed that a team of officials shall soon be sent by Ministry of Home Affairs to assess the damages caused by the natural calamity. Grateful to HM for his help,” Mr Sarma tweeted on Monday

New deaths have been reported in eight districts, according to officials with the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), and seven people have gone missing in five districts.

In total, 810 relief camps and 615 relief distribution centres have been established in the impacted districts. Over 1,13,485 hectares of crops have been devastated, resulting in a total of 2,31,819 persons sleeping in relief camps.

At various locations, the water in five rivers — the Brahmaputra, Kopili, Beki, Pagladiya, and Puthimari — is flowing above the danger level.

According to sources in the Chief Minister’s Office, Amit Shah’s first phone was to inquire about the flood situation, and his second was to advise the chief minister that a central team will be dispatched to the state to assess the damage.
