On June 26–27, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will go to Germany as a special guest at the G7 Summit. On his way home, he will stop in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to meet with the country’s senior officials, the external affairs ministry announced Wednesday.

At the invitation of Chancellor Olaf Scholz, the prime minister will go to Schloss Elmau, a resort in Germany, for the G7 Summit. The environment, energy, climate, food security, health, gender equality, and democracy will be the topics of his two sessions, according to the ministry.

Other nations beyond India were invited to the G-7 meeting of the world’s advanced economies, including Indonesia, South Africa, Argentina, and Senegal.

Modi will meet privately with the leaders of several of the participating nations on the sidelines of the Summit.

The ministry stated that the invitation to the G7 Summit was in keeping with India and Germany’s “history of strong and close relationship and high-level political interactions.”

For the India-Germany intergovernmental dialogues, Modi last traveled to Germany in May 2022 along with important members of the Union cabinet.

In light of the war in Ukraine, some think Scholz’s offer to the prime minister to attend the G7 Summit is part of Germany’s efforts to draw India away from Russia. Due to its extensive strategic and security links with Russia, India has maintained a neutral posture on the Ukraine issue and has frequently urged for an end to the conflict.

India and Germany inked many sustainable development agreements during the May visit that would give India €10 billion in funding by 2030 to increase the use of clean energy. In terms of business, defense, and climate policy, Scholz at the time referred to India as Germany’s “key partner in Asia.”

On June 28, Modi will depart from the G7 Summit to the UAE. He will express his condolences for the passing of Sheik Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the former president and ruler of Abu Dhabi, during the brief visit, which is anticipated to take less than a day. He’ll also give Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan his congratulations on becoming the country’s next leader.

The visit comes in response to considerable outrage in West Asian nations after defamatory remarks made by two Bharatiya Janata Party spokespersons, who the party later fired. Unlike Kuwait and Qatar, the UAE denounced the comments but didn’t summon the Indian embassy to express their disapproval.

India’s second-largest export market in the UAE, which is also one of its main allies in West Asia for energy and security. A comprehensive economic partnership deal between the two nations was struck in February, and there are also over 3.5 million Indians living in the UAE.
