Local politician Shrikant Tyagi was arrested on Tuesday in Meerut by the Uttar Pradesh Police, four days after he is accused of abusing and assaulting a fellow female member of an upscale Noida community. A local court has sentenced him to 14 days of judicial imprisonment, along with his chauffeur and two other close friends.
Following her second 48-hour detention for questioning, Tyagi’s wife was arrested by the Noida Police. The stores Tyagi runs in Noida’s Bhangel market were also visited by a GST team.
On Friday, Tyagi had left Noida and gone directly to the Delhi airport. However, by the time he arrived at the Indira Gandhi International Airport that evening, a video showing him assaulting and manhandling a woman who lived in his Noida housing development had gone viral. He gave up on his airport concept and moved underground out of concern for his safety.
Eight squads of Noida Police were actively searching for Tyagi, according to senior officers. Later, four more teams of the UP STF were added to strengthen their numbers. The UP STF’s big surveillance team was also actively searching for the purported BJP member.
According to the commissioner, Tyagi admitted during a preliminary interrogation that the previous Bharatiya Janta Party chief Swami Prasad Maurya had given him the MLA sticker of the Assembly secretariat for his car. His charges are being looked into. A high-level committee of investigation, according to Mr. Singh, would also investigate into the Ghaziabad police’s provision of six gunners to him between 2018 and 2020.
Five of Tyagi’s high-end vehicles have so far been seized by Noida Police; one of them has an MLA sticker that is valid through 2023, and another has a sticker from the U.P. government.
