On Monday, Madhya Pradesh had heavy rain for a third day in a row in some areas, forcing the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert. In some areas of Himachal Pradesh, numerous people have also died as a result of floods and landslides brought on by severe rain.
In Odisha, thousands of people have been forced from their homes due to flooding, which has also damaged road infrastructure and cut off electricity and water supplies. 120,000 individuals have already been relocated from the affected areas by the state.
However, the worst flooding was still in the northern districts, where the Subarnekha river flooded low-lying areas and stranded residents in over 100 communities.
Authorities in the districts of Balasore and Mayurbhanj have ordered a widespread evacuation of low-lying regions after water levels in the two main rivers that flow through the area—Subarnarekha and Baitarani—broke the danger mark numerous times. A landslide claimed the lives of a village leader from the Mandi district, who had warned villagers about the landslide danger, along with seven members of his family. Despite the fact that rescue personnel had already headed for the area after learning about the landslide, the chief minister declared that their lives could not be saved.
“Nearly 156 villages in 83 gram panchayats in Balasore district have been hit by the flood. The administration has evacuated 40,000 people by Monday noon, and they are housed in 227 temporary shelters. The process is still underway,” Balasore District Collector Dattatraya Bhausaheb Shinde told PTI. Up to 743 routes, including the national highways connecting Manali and Chandigarh at Mandi and Shimla and Chandigarh at Shoghi, have been closed to vehicular traffic.
