All state associations have been asked by the Board of Management for Cricket in India (BCCI) to push out their elections by two months. More than 25 of the 38 linked models can be attributed to having elections in September.
Following the Lodha Committee’s advice, all state units held their elections in September 2019 under the new constitution.The Supreme Court’s pending decision regarding the Board’s request to end the cooling-off period for its office-holders is the cause of the BCCI directive.
The Board of Directors petitioned the Supreme Court last month for guidance on its request to permit its president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah to serve another term even though they had already served for six years. Treasurer Arun Dhumal had filed a petition with proposed changes to the new BCCI constitution in 2020.
According to the Lodha Committee’s recommendations, after serving in any post for six years, a person must resign and go through a three-year cooling-off period. For this purpose, the entire term in office is taken into account, whether at BCCI or any state association. This clause is being changed by the BCCI.
In October 2019, the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators was replaced by the current BCCI administration.
Tuesday’s emergency meeting of the Apex Council of the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) would be used to tackle this issue. Elections will reportedly be held by the state associations of Hyderabad, Madhya Pradesh, and Baroda. However, they have postponed the date in response to the BCCI’s letter.
