The funeral for Paola Maino, mother of Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, was held on Tuesday after she passed away on Saturday at her home in Italy, according to the Congress. The 90-year-old mother of the Congress president was ill, thus the president left on August 23. On Saturday, August 27, 2022, Mrs. Paola Maino, the mother of Smt. Sonia Gandhi, passed away in her Italian home.
A number of Congress officials, including Ashok Gehlot, the chief minister of Rajasthan, and Bhupesh Baghel, the chief minister of Chhattisgarh, sent their sympathies. “It’s very saddening to know about the demise of Congress President Smt Sonia Gandhi ji’s mother Mrs. Paola Maino ji. My deepest condolences to Sonia ji, Rahul ji, Priyanka ji and all family members. May God give them the strength to bear this loss. May the departed soul rest in peace,” Gehlot said on Twitter.
But despite this profound personal loss, Sonia Gandhi continued to fulfil her obligations to the Congress party. She presided over the Congress Working Committee meeting that was scheduled in advance on Sunday to determine the date of the election for Congress president. Rahul and Priyanka were present during the 30-minute CWC meeting as well.
A few party members claim that Paola frequently travelled to India to be with her daughter Sonia. Rahul and Priyanka have a very strong relationship with their grandmother. Particularly over the previous few years, Rahul made frequent trips to Maino. Numerous leaders expressed their sympathies. Omar Abdullah, the former head of government in Jammu and Kashmir, tweeted, “I join my father & other family members in conveying our heartfelt condolences to Mrs Sonia Gandhi ji, to Rahul, Priyanka and the entire family on the sad demise of Mrs Gandhi’s mother. May the soul of Mrs Maino rest in eternal peace.”
