International Women’s Day, Date and Significance
An individual forms a family and families form society. This society’s key pillar is its women Nowadays, women are highly and significantly involved in almost every field. Not only have women demonstrated their value, but they have also made a name for themselves at the pinnacles of every industry, from the kitchen to athletics, the media to acting, and education to business. To honor women’s historical, cultural, and political contributions, March 8 is globally observed as International Women’s Day.
Why is International Women’s Day celebrated?
The history of celebrating International Women’s Day is 108 years old when about 15,000 women took to the streets of New York City, America on various issues. Some issues were raised by these women which were being ignored by the New York government at that time. These issues included demands for women to reduce working hours, better wages, and the right to vote.
This protest by women proved to be very effective and a year after this protest, the Socialist Party of America approved celebrating International Women’s Day. The idea of celebrating Women’s Day at the international level came from German suffragist and Women’s Office leader ‘Clara Zetkin‘.
Clara Zetkin proposed celebrating Women’s Day globally in the year 1910. The first International Women’s Day was celebrated in the year 1911 in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland. International Women’s Day was formally recognized in the year 1975 when the United Nations started celebrating it.
Theme of International Women’s Day- 2024
International Women’s Day is celebrated on 8 March in the country and abroad. This day is celebrated with a theme related to gender equality. For the first time in 1996, International Women’s Day was celebrated under a theme. That year, a special theme was kept by the United Nations for this special day ‘Celebrating the past, planning for the future’. On this occasion, special programs are organized by many organizations. These special programs are organized especially for women.
For the year 2024, the theme of International Women’s Day proposed by the UN official is “Invest in women: Accelerate progress“.
How is International Women’s Day celebrated?
Although every day is incomplete without women, on this day women are made to feel special. Be it at home or office, the importance of women and their achievements are appreciated everywhere. For doing this they are given special gifts. Women are also given leave on this day in some offices. In fact, on this day the focus is on telling women how special they are. Without them the existence of this universe is impossible.
