The sparrow and house sparrow isfound in almost every continent of the world. But, since last few years these species are becoming extinct due to many reasons globally including India. The main reasons for their extinction are urbanization, environmental pollution, degradation of ecological resources, global warming etc.

World Sparrow Day is celebrated every year on 20 March to create awareness among people about preventing the extinction of these species.

Beginning of Sparrow Day

World Sparrow Day was started by Nature Forever Society of India and Eco-Sys Action Foundation of France. The first World Sparrow Day was celebrated on March 20, 2010. For the first time, the objective of Sparrow Day was to create awareness among people about the decline in the sparrow population and the need for their conservation.

Nature Forever Society was founded by Mohammed Dilawar, an Indian conservationist. Mohammad Dilawar started his work by helping house sparrows from Nashik. Later for his efforts, he was also named one of the “Heroes of the Environment” by Time Magazine in 2008.

‘Why is the sparrow special?’

The sparrow is a commonly seen bird. The house sparrow is closely related to human habitation and farming. Sparrows are considered indicators of the environmental health of an area and their declining numbers are a cause for concern.
