World Water Day : 22 March

History of Water Day


First of all, in 1992, the United Nations organized a conference on the issue of environment and development in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. An initiative was taken to celebrate World Water Day on the same day. Later, World Water Day was celebrated for the first time in the year 1993. Since then, World Water Day started being celebrated every year on 22 March. As a result of these tireless efforts, in the year 2010, the United Nations recognized the right to safe, clean drinking water and sanitation as a human right.
