World Water Day is celebrated every year on 22 March. Its objective is to make people aware about the importance of water. The day aims to highlight water-related challenges in the world and work towards solutions that ensure water security for all.
First of all, in 1992, the United Nations organized a conference on the issue of environment and development in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. An initiative was taken to celebrate World Water Day on the same day. Later, World Water Day was celebrated for the first time in the year 1993. Since then, World Water Day started being celebrated every year on 22 March. As a result of these tireless efforts, in the year 2010, the United Nations recognized the right to safe, clean drinking water and sanitation as a human right.
Every year on Water Day, the United Nations keeps a special theme and runs a campaign based on that theme. The campaign for World Water Day, March 22, 2024 is now live. This year’s theme is ‘Water for Peace’, which focuses on the vital role of water in the world’s stability and prosperity.
