Radhakrishnan was born as 'Sarvepalli Radhakrishnaya'. He was born on September 5, 1888. His father's name was Sarvepalli Veeraswamy and mother's name was Seethamma. He was born in Tiruttani, North Arcot district of the erstwhile Madras Presidency (now in Tiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu). His early years were spent in Tiruttani and Tirupati. His father was a subordinate revenue officer in the service of a local zamindar.
His primary education was from Tiruttani's K.V. Happened in high school. In 1896 he moved to the Hermannsberg Evangelical Lutheran Mission School in Tirupati and the Government Higher Secondary School, Walajapet. Thereafter, he did higher education from Madras Christian College, Madras.
Dr. Radhakrishnan was able to secure a temporary teaching position at a Presidency College in Madras after the completion of his education.
At Presidency College, Radhakrishnan lectured on various topics in psychology as well as European philosophy. As a junior assistant professor, logic, epistemology and moral theory were the main areas of his teaching.
During this, many of his articles and research papers were published. The 'Guardian Press' in Madras published his 'M.A. Thesis'. In 1911, Radhakrishnan became accessible to Western readers when his article "The Ethics of the Bhagavad Gita and Kant" appeared in "The International Journal of Ethics". Also, his edited lectures on psychology were published under the title 'Notes on the Essentials of Psychology'.
Radhakrishnan's contribution spanned various fields including philosophy, education and politics. He is known for his work in the field of philosophy, especially for interpreting and popularizing Indian philosophy in both the Western and Indian context. His works on comparative religion and philosophy helped bridge the gap between Eastern and Western thought.
Apart from this, his contribution in the field of politics is also important. Radhakrishnan served as the first Vice President of India from 1952 to 1962 and the second President of India from 1962 to 1967.
