Vinoba Bhave, full name Vinayak Narhari Bhave, was a prominent Indian freedom fighter, social reformer and proponent of non-violence and land reforms. His father's name was Narahari Shambhu Rao and mother's name was Rukmini Devi. He was born on September 11, 1895 in Gagode village in present-day Maharashtra, India and died on November 15, 1982.
Freedom Struggle: Vinoba Bhave was an active participant in the Indian independence movement under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi. He joined Gandhiji's non-cooperation movement and played an important role in the struggle for India's independence from British rule.
Bhoodan Movement: Vinoba Bhave is perhaps best known for leading the Bhoodan Movement (Land Gift Movement). The movement began in 1951 and aimed to persuade wealthy landowners to voluntarily donate a portion of their land to landless and marginalized persons. He believed in redistribution of land to create a more equitable society.
Sarvodaya Movement: Vinoba Bhave was closely associated with the Sarvodaya Movement, which sought the upliftment of all sections of the society. He emphasized the principles of non-violence, simplicity and self-reliance.
Philosophy of Non-Violence: Vinoba Bhave was a staunch supporter of non-violence, he was influenced by Mahatma Gandhi's philosophy of non-violence (Ahimsa). He chose the path of nonviolence as a means of resolving conflicts and promoting social justice.
Gramdan Movement: Apart from the Bhoodan Movement, Vinoba Bhave also started the Gramdan Movement, which encouraged villagers to collectively deposit their land for the general welfare of the community. The objective of this movement was to create self-reliant and cooperative villages.
Vinoba Bhave received many awards and honors during his lifetime, including the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Community Leadership in 1958. He was also a posthumous recipient of India's highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna, in 1983.
