The establishment of BSF was a direct result of the India-Pakistan war. In fact, during the India-Pakistan war in the year 1965, Pakistan attacked Sardar Post, Chhar Bet and Beria Bet in Kutch on April 9, 1965. At that time, the responsibility of security of this post was mainly of the State Armed Police. Due to the inadequacy of the State Armed Police to deal with armed aggression following this attack, after the end of the war, the government formed the Border Security Force for the purpose of protecting India's international borders. Its formation was announced by the third Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri.
K F Rustamji, from the Indian Police Service, was given the charge of the first Director General of BSF. Khusro Faramurz Rustamji (K.F. Rustamji, IPS) was entrusted with the task of selecting officers and soldiers serving in the police, army, navy and air force to create a border security force. Established in 1965 with 25 battalions, the force is today the largest force in the world with 192 battalions.
