The Russia-Ukraine War which started around a decade ago is still seemingly hot. On one hand, where Ukraine is seeking help globally, Russia seems to be not deterred by any of those international sanctions and restrictions.
On 24 February 2024, the invasion of Russian troops in the recognized territory of Ukraine because of its supposed entry into NATO(North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) forced Ukraine to ask for help from the West, namely the United States, Germany, and Sweden. Russia is still standing firm on its ground and has now declared to lower the threshold for using nuclear weapons including scenarios where a non-nuclear state backed by a nuclear state attacks.
It is a proven fact that no issue converts into war single-handedly. Let us have a glance at the prominent reasons for this decade-long ongoing war.
Russia and Ukraine have a long shared history, where Ukraine was once a part of the Russian Empire and later the Soviet Union. The Crimea region of Ukraine has been the most conflicted and mutually acclaimed region of
Historical Ties and Territorial Claims: Russia and Ukraine share a long history, with Ukraine being part of the Russian Empire and later the Soviet Union. Russia has long claimed a sphere of influence over Ukraine, and there have been ongoing disputes over territorial claims, particularly in the Crimea region.
The NATO acclamation: Russia has always been upset about the idea of Ukraine joining NATO, and has called it out as an eastward expansion and a potential threat to the security of Russia. It had been a major point of contention, with Russia viewing it as a direct challenge to its interests.
Economic Factors: Russia is a major energy producer and supplier in the European continent. This has led to cutthroat competition and constant strife amongst participating nations Russia has sought to maintain its dominance in these areas, while Ukraine has aspired to greater economic independence.
Misinformation and Propaganda: Both sides have engaged in misinformation and propaganda campaigns to justify their actions and undermine the credibility of their opponents. This has made it difficult to find common ground and negotiate a peaceful resolution. The polarised opinions from all across the world have made these triffles an international propaganda and yet it has been legally treated as a bi-nation conflict, making resolutions difficult to conclude.
Economic Consequences
Regional long wars usually drain the economy and affect the supply chains. This has led to an increase in rates worldwide, primarily due to increased energy prices, and has impacted a ripple effect. This has disrupted the global supply chain critically, especially that of essential goods such as semiconductors, metals, and agricultural products leading to shortages and higher prices of the same. The war has dampened economic growth in many countries and has grappled with increased costs, uncertainty, and reduced investment.
Weakening international institutions are now challenged raising questions about their ability to prevent and resolve conflicts and prevent them. The conflict has led to a realignment of alliances, with some countries strengthening their ties with the West while others seek to maintain neutrality or align more closely with Russia. This conflict has fueled an arms race, as countries increase their military spending to enhance their security and deter potential threats.
Humanitarian Consequences:
The war has led to a massive refugee crisis, with millions of Ukrainians fleeing their homes to seek safety in neighboring countries and beyond. There have been numerous crimes of wartime that have caused several military and civilian casualties. These deaths are also because of food insecurity created.
These consequences will certainly affect everyone either directly or indirectly. And this nuclear threat is certainly a warning for a united international effort.
