The President of India is the head of state of the Republic of India. The President is the symbolic head of the executive. Apart from being the first citizen of the country, the President is also the Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Armed Forces. Rajendra Prasad was the first President of India who assumed office on January 26, 1950. Smt. Draupadi Murmu is the 15th and current President, who was sworn in on 25 July 2022.
The post of ‘President’ is described in Article 52 to Article 62 of the Indian Constitution. These articles describe everything from the qualifications and duties of becoming President to his election and impeachment.
In the words of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar, “The President has the same position under the draft Constitution as the King has under the English Constitution. He is the head of the state but not of the executive. He represents the nation but does not rule the nation. He is the symbol of the nation. Their place in the administration is like a formal instrument on a seal by which the decisions of the nation are communicated.”
