To honour the freedom fighter on the eve of his 115th birthday, the Chandigarh airport was christened Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport on Wednesday.
The airport was formally christened by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman during a ceremony. Along with Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Haryana Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala, and Haryana Home Minister Anil Vij, the governors of Punjab and Haryana, Banwarilal Purohit and Bandaru Dattatraya, also attended the occasion. General VK Singh (retired), Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation, and airport CEO Rakesh Ranjan Sahay were also present.
Nirmala Sitharaman, the Union Minister of Finance, explained in a speech "Today, I feel very humbled & honoured to be here on this day when we are renaming Chandigarh Airport as Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport Our generation has the opportunity to remember sacrifice made by #ShaheedBhagatSingh in freedom struggle."
Shaheed Bhagat Singh will be honoured with a name change for Chandigarh Airport, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated on Sunday during his weekly Mann Ki Baat radio show. This declaration was made prior to September 28th, the birth anniversary of liberation warrior Bhagat Singh.
"Just before his birth anniversary, as a tribute, an important decision has been taken, it has been decided that the Chandigarh airport will now be named after Shaheed Bhagat Singh," PM Modi went on to say.
