Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin launched the expansion of the state government's breakfast scheme for school children. On this occasion, he provided breakfast to the school students and also ate food sitting with them. He invited the elected representatives to initiate the extension of the scheme up to one government primary school in their respective constituencies.
The chief minister had earlier said that the order was issued on June 7, 2023, to extend the breakfast scheme to all 31,008 government primary schools, urban and rural, in Tamil Nadu, with an aim to benefit 15.75 lakh primary students.
Already, breakfast is served under the Chief Minister Breakfast Scheme to 1.14 lakh students of classes 1 to 5 in 1,545 government primary schools. Seeing the excellent results achieved in the initial phase, the government has started expansion. Its aim is to ensure that children do not come to school without food.
Launching the breakfast scheme in Madurai on September 15, 2022, Stalin quoted late Periyar EV Ramasamy, CN Annadurai and M Karunanidhi, saying poverty or caste should not be a barrier to access to education.
