According to Rampur police in Uttar Pradesh, Samajwadi Party politician Azam Khan was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly threatening a witness in a land encroachment case in which he is an accused.
"For threatening a witness in a case, a FIR has been filed against Azam Khan and five additional unknown individuals. The situation is being looked into, "Police Superintendent Ashok Kumar said.
The FIR was filed in response to a complaint made by one Nanhe, a witness in the case and a resident of the city's Boria neighbourhood.
According to Nanhe's accusation, five unidentified people visited his home around 9.30 am.
Police said that the guys informed Nanhe that Azam Khan had requested their visit and had warned him not to testify negatively about Khan in court.
Azam Khan and a few other people are accused of encroaching on other people's property, and Nanhe is a witness in the case.
The case was filed in 2019 and is currently being heard in a district MP/MLA court.
On Wednesday, there was a hearing in the matter. When Nanhe arrived in court, his testimony was written down.
The top officer said that steps had been made to assure the witness' security.
An MLA from Rampur named Azam Khan has been charged in over 90 instances, including stealing, criminal conspiracy, and extortion.
He was detained by the police in 2020 and spent 27 months in custody before being freed on bail.
