COVID cases in Delhi cross the 15,000 mark, virus grips the nation

The national capital on Thursday reported 15,097 new Covid cases, registering a 41 percent increase from the previous day when it reported 10,665 fresh cases. The positivity rate has risen up to 15 percent. 6 deaths have also been reported in the past 24 hours.

This was the highest single-day spike in the number of cases since May 8, 2021. The positivity rate on that day was 23 percent and 332 deaths were also recorded. Satyendar Jain, the Health Minister said that the situation in Delhi is now better if we compare it to the previous waves of the virus. There has been no death due to the latest variant of Coronavirus called Omicron. He also mentioned that the number of cases was rising up steeply because of the number of tests being carried out every day.

A few of the healthcare staff have also tested positive but it is not alarming as of now. The government has stated that no new restrictions are being imposed. It also stated that no new restrictions are being imposed as of now, the night and weekend curfew is sufficient. There are more than 5 thousand containment zones being established in the city.

India on Friday reported 1,17,100 fresh Covid-19 cases. This is the highest since early June. The nation has registered a 28 percent surge in the daily covid cases. 302 deaths have also been recorded overall in India.

Maharashtra is leading with 797 cases and Delhi is second with 465 cases of Omicron as of now.

The variant which is considered less severe than the other variants that shook up the world is now globally dominating replacing the Delta. The World Health Organisation has said that the Omicron should not be considered mild even though the risk of hospitalization is reduced. The WHO chief also said that considering the virus mild would be a huge mistake as the virus is killing people all over the world. He also urged the nations to act fairly in sharing the vaccines if they wanted the pandemic to end sooner. The number of cases worldwide has been increasing at an unprecedented rate and the healthcare infrastructure in most countries is overwhelmed.

Another variant called the IHU which was first registered in September 2021 is also being monitored by the WHO.

The world is witnessing the third wave of the pandemic and no matter what the severity of the virus, people are dying. Any kind of sloppy behavior now would lead to the extension of the pandemic. Wearing masks is not a choice anymore but a necessity.
