Daniil Medvedev exits the Mallorca Open as Stefanos Tsitsipas advances to the semifinals.

In the quarterfinals of the Mallorca Open on Thursday, world number one Daniil Medvedev was defeated by Roberto Bautista Agut, while second seed Stefanos Tsitsipas advanced to the semifinals. Bautista Agut defeated Medvedev 6-3, 6-2 to avenge his loss to the Russian in the Halle quarterfinals last week.

The defeat ends Medvedev’s campaign on grass courts. Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, a number of players have been banned from Wimbledon, including him.

“I had to play very good to beat Daniil. He’s the number one, the last champion here in Mallorca. He just beat me a few days ago. I played a really complete match,” said Bautista Agut.

Since Juan Manuel Cerundolo, who was ranked 335th in the world at the time and won in Cordoba in 2021, Bellier is the lowest-ranked semi-finalist.

In order to advance to the championship match, Tsitsipas—who has exited Wimbledon in the first round on three of his four attempts—must defeat France’s Benjamin Bonzi. On grass, he has never achieved victory.

Marcos Giron, an American, was defeated by Tsitsipas in three sets.
