Google TV 4K and Chromecast are now both receiving Android TV 12 firmware updates

A firmware update for Chromecast with Google TV is now available, and the operating system has been significantly upgraded to Android TV 12 from Android TV 10. The Google standalone streaming device, which runs on Android TV software with the Google TV user interface on top, was released internationally in 2020 but only reached India in 2022. The new software update is now available for Chromecast with Google TV 4K devices. It includes enhancements to the surround sound and HDR format options, among other things.

In our long-term evaluation unit, Gadgets360 has confirmed that the update is going out to the Chromecast with Google TV 4K. The updated firmware displays the build number STTE.220621.019.A2.9082754, with the software version going from Android TV 10 to 12. Furthermore, the update also improves the Android security patch level to July 2022. The update is 722MB in size.

The software update includes feature enhancements such as new camera and microphone privacy toggles, additional user settings to let you control HDR format and surround sound, the ability to switch refresh rates while maintaining content frame rate, and more in terms of privacy, security, bug fixes, and performance enhancements.

The Google TV user interface debuted with the Chromecast but is now included on several products from other manufacturers, such as Sony and Realme.

Only the more recent Chromecast with Google TV 4K, introduced to the world in 2020, is now compatible with the most recent software upgrade. The business also introduced a less expensive full-HD Chromecast with a Google TV model, selling for Rs. 4,499 in India. The more costly version supports Ultra-HD streaming with support for high dynamic range content up to the Dolby Vision format.
