In a long report that criticizes at least one senior government official and VK Sasikala, the close assistant of the politician who lived with her, a retired judge ruled that J Jayalalithaa’s death in 2016 after being taken to a prestigious Chennai hospital warranted investigation.
When Ms. Jayalalithaa’s party, the AIDMK, ruled Tamil Nadu in 2017, a commission headed by a former judge of the Madras High Court, A Arumughaswamy, was established to sort through legal claims, conflicting accounts of Ms. Jayalalithaa’s illness and treatment at Apollo Hospital, and conspiracy theories.
When the DMK assumed control of the state, it committed to seeing that Ms. Jayalalthaa’s death was thoroughly probed. The report of Justice Arumughaswamy was delivered to the government in August.
