Panna Lal and Anita had been married for 22 years and were parents to five daughters. The couple frequently fought over Lal’s desire to have a son. This ongoing conflict culminated in a horrifying act of violence when Lal attempted to cut open his wife’s stomach to check if she was carrying a boy.
The wife’s family was aware of the couple’s disputes and had tried to mediate. Despite their efforts, Lal threatened to divorce Anita and remarry to father a son. On the day of the attack, another argument erupted over the unborn child’s gender. In a fit of rage, Lal threatened to use a sickle to confirm the baby’s sex and even threatened to kill Anita when she resisted.
According to reports, after a heated exchange, Lal attacked Anita with a sickle. She tried to flee, but Lal caught her and slashed her abdomen. The wound was so severe that Anita’s intestines were exposed. Despite the grievous injury, Anita managed to run into the street, where her brother, who worked nearby, came to her aid. Lal fled the scene upon seeing him.
Anita was rushed to the hospital, where doctors managed to save her life. Tragically, her baby boy did not survive the attack. In court, Anita recounted the horrific details, stating that the cut was so deep that her intestines were visible.
During the trial, Panna Lal claimed that Anita had inflicted the wounds on herself to falsely implicate him due to a property dispute with her brothers. However, the court found his defense unconvincing. The severity of the crime, along with Anita’s testimony and medical evidence, led to his conviction.
