What is angioplasty?

Angioplasty is a procedure that opens blocked or narrowed arteries that supply blood to the heart. It restores blood flow to the heart muscle without open heart surgery. According to experts, angioplasty is done in emergency situations like a heart attack. Getting a patient angioplasty within an hour can reduce the risk of death. The sooner this is done, the less the patient’s risk of heart failure. The sooner angioplasty is done, the more damage will be caused to the heart muscle. Angioplasty is also called percutaneous coronary intervention.

There are three types of angioplasty:
Balloon Angioplasty, Laser Angioplasty and Atherectomy Angioplasty

How is angioplasty done?

• During balloon angioplasty, a long, thin tube called a catheter is inserted into a blood vessel and tried to open the blockage. The doctor monitors the tubes leading into the vessels with the help of X-rays or video. Once the catheter reaches the artery, it is inflated. This balloon presses and flattens the plaque, thereby widening the artery and improving the patient’s blood circulation.
• Catheter is also used in laser angioplasty, in which the help of laser is taken instead of balloon. The laser is taken to the plaque and an attempt is made to open the clogged artery by vaporizing it.
• Atherectomy is done when the plaque cannot be removed even by balloon or laser angioplasty.
