After more than a century, Nagaland received a second railway station on Friday with the commissioning of a new facility at Shokhuvi.
In 1903, Dimapur Railway Station opened its doors in the state’s commercial centre.
The Donyi Polo Express was flagged off by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio from Shokhuvi Railway Station during the day. Between Guwahati in Assam and Naharlagun in Arunachal Pradesh, the Donyi Polo Express ran every day. Currently, the train service has been extended to Shokhuvi, which is close to Dimapur.
“Today is a historic day for Nagaland. The State got the 2nd railway terminal passenger services after a gap of more than 100 years on Dhansari-Shokhuvi railway line,” Rio tweeted.
Additionally, the chief minister asked railway officials to see to it that Dimapur Railway Station received its fair share of development so that it could continue to serve not just the residents of Nagaland but also those of Manipur and the surrounding Assamese regions.
Anshul Gupta, general manager of Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), said it is a proud occasion for Indian Railways and NFR, which is working to connect all the northeastern state capitals with railways in a timely manner.
The 90-km-long wide gauge route from Assam’s Dhansiri to Nagaland’s Zubza district was given the green light in 2016 and construction has already begun. The cutoff date was moved from 2020 to 2024.
