The second-largest oil company in Russia, Lukoil, and its CEO, Ravil Maganov, apparently fell from a Moscow hospital window and perished on Thursday. Since Lukoil's founding in 1993, the 67-year-old has been employed there.
Following a "serious illness," Maganov passed away, according to a statement released by Lukoil on Thursday. According to Russian media, he was being treated at the Central Clinical Hospital in Moscow when he passed away from his wounds.
Maganov is the most recent of several well-known corporate executives to pass away suddenly. Investigating authorities claimed they were at the scene trying to determine how he passed away. He reportedly fell out of a sixth-floor window early on Thursday morning, according to Tass news agency, who later added that he had committed suicide.
The Lukoil board expressed their support for the victims of "this catastrophe" shortly after Russia invaded Ukraine and demanded an immediate halt to the hostilities. After the UK slapped sanctions on him in retaliation to the invasion, its millionaire president, Vagit Alekperov, resigned in April.
The largest private firm in Russia is Lukoil. In a statement, the company credited Maganov's managerial skills with helping it grow into one of the biggest energy companies in the world. He started working for the private oil company in 1993, and two years ago he was appointed chairman. He received a lifetime achievement award from President Vladimir Putin three years prior.
Maganov had been receiving care at a hospital on the western outskirts of Moscow, which is well renowned for treating members of Russia's financial and political elite. President Putin visited the scene on Thursday morning to lay flowers by Mikhail Gorbachev's coffin after learning of his death on Tuesday at the Central Clinical Hospital.
