What is equinox?
- There are two conditions of the Earth which occur on March 21 and September 23 when direct rays of the Sun fall on the equator and day and night are equal throughout the world. These positions are known as equinoxes.
- The spring equinox occurs on March 21 and the autumnal equinox occurs on September 23.
- September 23 marks autumn in the Northern Hemisphere and spring in the Southern Hemisphere. The opposite is the case on March 21 when it is spring in the Northern Hemisphere and autumn in the Southern Hemisphere.
- The equinoxes occur on March 20 and September 23 each year, and both days have equal lengths of day and night. To avoid any confusion, the equinoxes are called the March equinox (northern equinox) and the September equinox (southern equinox).
