Just before the arrival of Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov’s visit to India, the U.S is sending a chief strategist on the sanctions against Russia for the war in Ukraine.
Deputy National Security Adviser Daleep Singh is due to be in Delhi for the summits on Thursday. While Mr Lavrov will hold meetings with s. Jaishankar, External Affairs Minister on Friday. Before that, Mr Lavrov will be in Beijing where he is attending a conference on Afghanistan.
According to what The Hindu had apprised earlier, Mr Lavrov’s visit to Delhi is expected to inform the government on Russia’s action in Ukraine, the peace talk, and will also focus on the Russian offer of overlooked oil for India, something the government is said to be considered firmly. Also, a team from Russia’s Central Bank is in India this week to discuss payment mechanisms using Indian and Russian banks, and Rupee-Rouble transactions. This is done in order to avoid the growing number of sanctions placed by the European Union.
Mr Singh was recently appointed U.S. President Joe Biden’s Deputy National Security Adviser for international economics. He has been commissioned with crafting and executing the U.S. sanctions against Russia. Also, expected to fortify the message delivered by the European Union and U.K. officials.
The sanctions opposed till including financial bans on banks, companies, and individuals close to the Kremlin. Also, the sanctions are targeted against Russian President Vladimir Putin, his Cabinet, and Parliament members. Mr Singh was formerly on President Barack Obama’s treasury team. He worked before on the sanctions on Russia when Russia annexed Crimea.
