C. N. Annadurai (1909-1969) was the first Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, India. He was a leader of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party and is considered one of the most important figures in Tamil history. Annadurai was born in a poor family in Ettayapuram, Tamil Nadu on 15th September 1909. He studied law and worked as a journalist before entering politics. He was elected to the Madras Legislative Assembly in 1957 and became the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu in 1967. Annadurai was a popular and charismatic leader who is remembered for his speeches and his work for the welfare of the people of Tamil Nadu. He is also known for his contributions to the Tamil language and literature.
On February 3, 1969, Tamil Nadu witnessed over 15 million people – an unbroken world record – participating in the last journey of former chief minister Conjeevaram Natarajan Annadurai. His ideology was a deadly combination of anti-Brahminism, iconoclasm, socialism, ethnic pride and racial chauvinism.
