Didar Singh Randhawa, also known as Dara Singh, was a wrestler, actor, director, producer and politician. He is best known for playing the role of 'Hanumanji' in the Indian mythological series "Ramayana". Dara Singh is known as 'Ironman of Indian Cinema', 'Original Muscle Man of Bollywood' and 'Action King of Bollywood'.

Was born in Punjab

Dara Singh was born on November 19, 1928. He was born in a Jat Sikh family. He was born in Dharamuchak village of Majha region of Punjab. His father's name was Surat Singh Randhawa and mother's name was Balwant Kaur.

Never lose in the arena

• In the year 1947, Dara Singh went to Singapore. In Singapore he worked in a drum-manufacturing mill and began wrestling training under Harnam Singh at the Great World Stadium.
• Later, when he started doing 'professional wrestling', he wrestled with some of the greatest wrestlers in the world at that time.
• He competed against opponents such as Bill Verna, Firpo Zbyszko, John Da Silva, Rikidozan, Danny Lynch and Ski Hi Lee. His encounter with King Kong is still remembered.
• In 1954, Dara Singh participated in the Rustam-e-Hind (Champion of India) tournament, where he won the final by defeating Tiger Joginder Singh.
• Subsequently, in 1959, he won the Commonwealth Championship by defeating George Gordienko in Calcutta.
• On May 29, 1968, in Bombay, he became world champion by defeating Lou Thesz.
• Dara Singh visited one by one all the countries where freestyle wrestling was fought. It is said that he wrestled for fifty-five years and did not lose even a single one of his five hundred matches.
• In the year 1983, he won the last match of his life and retired from wrestling.

Have also worked in films

He acted in Hindi and Punjabi films and television. He worked as a film producer, director and writer.

He started his career as an actor in 1952 with Sangdil. In a film career spanning fifty-five years, Dara Singh worked in more than one hundred and ten films as an actor, writer and director. Some of these famous films are 'Jab We Met', 'Kal Ho Na Ho', 'Anand', 'Mera Naam Joker', etc.

But he got fame from television.

He moved to television in the late 1980s, where he played the role of 'Hanuman Ji' in the television adaptation of the Hindu epic Ramayana.

He acted as 'Bheem' in various Mahabharata films. Apart from this, he has also been seen in the role of 'Balram'.

Dara Singh joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in January 1998. He became the first sportsperson to be nominated to the Rajya Sabha. He remained in Rajya Sabha between 2003 and 2009. Along with this, he was also the ‘President’ of ‘Jat Mahasabha’.

Last Time

Dara Singh was admitted to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital after suffering a heart attack on July 7, 2012. But when the doctors gave up, his family brought him home on July 11, 2012 and he died the next day on July 12, 2012 at his home in Mumbai. His last rites were performed at Juhu crematorium.
