Three civil service students died due to drowning due to waterlogging in the basement of Rau’s IAS Study Circle, a coaching center located in Old Rajendra Nagar, Delhi. Rau’s Coaching Center charges more than Rs 1.5 lakh for a course of only nine to 10 months.

  • Navin was a resident of Neeleeswaram in Ernakulam district of Kerala.
  • 23-year-old Dalwin was pursuing his PhD from JNU.
  • He was the son of former police officer Delvin Suresh and T S Linslet, former Geography department head at Kalady University.

Cracking UPSC was Dream

He had come to Delhi after completing his MA in 2017. He had joined the coaching institute eight months ago but was staying in a rented accommodation near the university in Vasant Kunj area. Police said Nevin was not a full time student of the centre and would often come to the library for books.

The family was from Thiruvananthapuram and settled in Ernakulam, where Professor Lancelot was working. When Navin’s parents were informed about the news on Sunday, they were in church. He was shocked to hear the news of this tragedy and was taken to the hospital. His friend remembered him as a hardworking student.

How did the students die?

  • Police said that the Delhi Fire Department had received information about waterlogging in Rao IAS Study Center and Karol Bagh area at around 7 pm on Saturday evening. Police were told that two or three students were trapped in the flooded basement.
  • When the police reached the spot, they found the basement filled with a lot of water. When attempts were made to drain the water out, there was initially a hindrance as rain water was seeping into the basement.
  • However, when the water receded from the road, the water level dropped from 12 feet to eight feet. After the water receded, it was discovered that three students had died and their bodies were taken out.
  • Giving details of the incident, police said there were around 30 students at the coaching centre, out of which 14 were rescued and taken to hospital, while others themselves escaped.
