19 people including 6 army personnel have died due to sudden flood in Teesta river due to cloudburst in Sikkim. At the same time, more than 100 people including 23 army personnel have gone missing in the flood. The flood has caused massive damage in the state. Meanwhile, continuous efforts are being made to trace the missing army soldiers. The Defence PRO in Guwahati said that the search for missing Indian Army soldiers is going on.
Apart from searching for the missing Army personnel, the Indian Army is providing food, medical aid and communication facilities to the stranded people and tourists in North Sikkim. PRO Defense said, “We are searching for missing soldiers in the downstream areas of Teesta Barrage. Army vehicles are being dug out and items are being recovered at the incident site in Burdang near Singtam. Teams of Tricolor Mountain Rescue, tracker dogs, special radar and additional resources have been brought in to help in the search operation."
The PRO further informed, "Meanwhile, Trishakti Corps Indian Army personnel have located 1471 tourists present in the areas of Lachen-Chatan, Lachung and Chungthang. With the improvement in the weather on October 6, helicopters were started to rescue the stranded tourists. There may be an opportunity. It is being planned jointly by the state government, the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force."
He said surveys were being conducted by all agencies to assess the damage and plan restoration of road connectivity. Road connectivity has been restored between Singtam and Burdang with single lane cleared for vehicular movement.
