Guru Nanak: Death anniversary special 22 September

Guru Nanak, also known as “Baba Nanak”, was the founder of Sikhism and the first of the ten Sikh Gurus. Guru Nanak Dev Ji had in his personality all the qualities of a philosopher, yogi, householder, religious reformer, social reformer, poet, patriot and friend of the world. Today, 22nd September, on his death anniversary, let us know some things about him.

Guru Nanak Dev : A Brief Biography

Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born in Talwandi in present-day Punjab province of Pakistan, which later came to be known as Nankana Sahib. According to the English calendar, his date of birth is considered to be April 15, 1469, but his birthday is celebrated as Prakashotsav festival on the day of Kartik Purnima, which falls 15 days after Diwali in October-November.

His father's name was Mehta Kaluchand Khatri Brahmin. His mother's name was Tripta Devi. Talwandi's name later became Nanakana after the name of Nanak ji. His sister's name was Nanaki.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji was married to 'Sulakkhani' Ji at the age of 16. Their marriage took place on 24 September 1487 in Batala city. After marriage, they had two sons – Shri Chandmuni and Lakhmi Chand (or Lakhmi Das).

At the age of about 55, Guru Nanak Dev settled in Kartarpur and lived there till his last days. During this period he went on short visits to the Nath Yogi center of Achal and the Sufi centers of Pakpattan and Multan. In those times, Nanak's followers were called Kartari (meaning 'people of Kartarpur village') by others.

Nanak appointed Bhai Lahna as the successor Guru and renamed him Guru Angad, meaning “your own” or “your part”. Shortly after announcing his successor, Nanak died at Kartarpur on September 22, 1539, at the age of 70.
