Roopa was born on November 25, 1963. She was born in Kolkata, West Bengal. Samarendra Lal Ganguly and Juthika Ganguly were his parents. After completing her higher secondary education from Beltala Girls High School and Jodhpur Park Girls High School, she obtained her graduation degree from Jogamaya Devi College, affiliated to the University of Calcutta, Kolkata.
Roopa Ganguly is a trained Rabindra Sangeet singer and also a classical dancer. Before accepting the role of Draupadi in the Mahabharata, she was portrayed in the Bengali TV serial 'Strir Patra' in 1985 and the Hindi TV serial Ganadevata in 1986.
Ganguly debuted as a child actress in the Anil Kapoor starrer Saheb (1985). Her second role was as a lead actress in the Malayalam film Ithile Iniyam Varu (1986) opposite Mammootty. After this, Roopa Ganguly played many different characters from Bengali, South to Bollywood films. She has acted in many TV serials like 'Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Hi Kijo'. Presently he is one of the board members of Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan.
In the year 2015, Ganguly joined the Bharatiya Janata Party ahead of the 2016 West Bengal Legislative Assembly elections. She contested the elections from Howrah North and lost. She was a Rajya Sabha MP from October 2016 to April 2022.
Talking about her personal life, Roopa Ganguly married Dhrub Mukherjee, a mechanical engineer, in 1992. They separated in 2007 after 14 years of marriage and later formally divorced in January 2009. They also have a son named Akash.
Rupa has also been honored with many awards. These awards include Smita Patil Memorial Award for Mahabharata and Aaj Kal Television Award, National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer for the Bengali film Abosheshi in 2011.
