- Hargobind Khorana was born on January 9, 1922.
- He was born in Multan village of then British India (present day Punjab, Pakistan).
- Ganpat Rai Khurana and Krishna Devi were his parents.
- He passed his high school examination from DAV School in Multan.
- Subsequently, earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Punjab University, Lahore.
- Khurana In 1945 he moved to England to study organic chemistry at the University of Liverpool on a Government of India fellowship.
- After the partition of India, his family came to India.
- He moved to the United States in 1952 and became an American citizen in 1966.
- In America, he studied and taught in many universities.
- In 1968, Khorana was awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine along with Marshall W. Nirenberg of Cornell University and Robert W. Holley of the National Institutes of Health. This award was given to him for elucidating the genetic code and its function in protein synthesis.
- In the year 1972, he became the first person in the world to completely synthesize a working gene outside a living organism. In fact, in this research his team was able to synthesize the first artificial copy of a yeast gene.
- Hargobind Khorana died on November 9, 2011, in Concord, Massachusetts, at the age of 89.
