Childhood spent in poverty

Matangini Hazra was born on October 19, 1870. He was born in a very poor family in Hogla village of Midnapore district in West Bengal (Bengal Presidency). The financial condition of the house was not very good. Father Thakurdas Meti managed the house somehow. He got married at the age of 12. Her husband “Trilochan Hazra” died just six years later. Since then he earned his living by doing 'labour' work.

From social work to independence revolution

After the death of her husband, Hajra devoted herself completely to social work. She always started participating in the sorrows and joys of the villagers. Because of her service-loving nature, she was attracted towards the freedom struggle.

In the year 1932, he participated in the non-cooperation movement and was arrested for breaking the Salt Act. He was immediately released but continued to protest for the removal of the tax. He was again arrested and imprisoned for six months in Baharampur.

In 1933, she also participated in the Sub-Divisional Congress Conference at Serampore and was injured in a lathi charge by the police.
